Welcome to our Orin Swift Masterclass! Here, we will explore the wines of Dave Phinney and delve into his philosophy of ‘finding the best fruit from the best vineyards and don’t screw it up’… and if you do screw it up ‘experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.’
Orin Swift Cellars was started in 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, and he started his long history of winemaking at high end wineries in the Napa Valley including Robeth Mondavi Winery and Whitehall Lane. In 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. Starting with two tons of Zinfandel and not much else, David spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the company into a multinational brand.
While a number of his wines are from Napa he also sources fruit from over 100 vineyards throughout California. In 2007/2008 Dave was introduced by a distributor/friend to a property and winery in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France (South West, bordering Spain). Ultimately, he purchased 300 acres of vines – planted to Grenache (up to 100 year old vines), Carignan, and Sryah. The property is called D66 or Department 66.
